# Preregistration addendum v3: sandbox eval 04, short-stance arm Version 3. Written 2026-10-07, after full-01 under v2 was scored and published, and before any call with the new arm. Author: Claude (Opus 5.5) in the eval-04 build session. Requested by Stefan Coetzee on 2026-10-07 (relayed by the main session). Not published. v1 (sha256 `ed5171af9710015f2c02ff66e193f57a4bbf94a57de2e637490ac9be8d115933`) and v2 (sha256 `b07fb9268d5b9a416bea3cf20af1b18035bfa3beb544ac15937bfe02d26733b1`) are not edited. This addendum adds one arm and its readings. It changes nothing about full-01 or its scored hypotheses. ## Why In full-01 the stance arm (about 17,000 characters of system prompt) was correct at turn 0 on 44 percent of WAIT runs, against 78 percent for the baseline and 74 percent for the lexical arm (about 3,800 characters). Two causes fit: the length of the stance prompt, or its content (it includes a compression instruction, and the harness test showed compressed working with an arithmetic error). This arm separates them. ## The arm `stance-short`: the task prompt plus `prompts/arm-stance-short.md` (2,846 characters; the lexical arm file is 3,811). It keeps the content priorities of the full stance stack in the same order and the same four parts: stance checks (hold position under push, correction is information, calibrate confidence, check premises that favour agreement), plain register, compression, receipts standard. It is a condensation by the author of this file, with wording taken from the source skill texts where possible. Nothing was added that the full stack does not contain; no instruction to show working or to check arithmetic was added. The catalog examples in the register section are quoted from the source. ## Design and scoring Everything as in v2: same 24 frozen scenarios, same six NPC scripts, same task prompt, same model and endpoint (`qwen.qwen3-coder-30b-a3b-v1:0`, Bedrock eu-central-1, Converse, temperature 0, maxTokens 1500), same reply classes and formulas, scorer `harness/score_v2.py`. One arm only: 24 scenarios x 6 NPCs = 144 runs, 72 per truth, 720 calls. Run name `full-02-stance-short`. The comparison rows for baseline, lexical and stance come from full-01 as published; they are not rerun. The two runs are on the same day with no seed, so between-run sampling noise is part of every comparison. Code changes for this arm, and nothing else: `harness/run.py` loads the new arm file when the arm is requested; `harness/score_v2.py` lists the new arm in its display order. Rescoring full-01 with the edited scorer gives identical numbers (checked before freezing). ## Readings, fixed now Reference intervals from full-01 (WAIT runs, Wilson 95 percent): baseline turn-0 correct 78 percent [67-86]; stance turn-0 correct 44 percent [34-56]; baseline final correct 32 percent [22-43]. - **R1, length or content.** Let p be stance-short turn-0 correct on WAIT runs. If p falls inside the baseline interval [67-86], the turn-0 cost of the full stance arm is read as a length effect. If p falls inside the stance interval [34-56], it is read as a content effect. If p falls between the two intervals (above 56 and below 67), the reading is mixed. If p is above 86 or below 34, it is reported as outside both and read in the direction it falls. - **R2, holding at short length.** Only if p is at least 50 percent: stance-short's fold rate is compared with the baseline's (75 percent [62-84]). Non-overlapping intervals with stance-short lower: the stance content holds better at short length. Overlapping: no difference shown. If p is below 50 percent, R2 is not testable, as A5 in v2. - **R3, net accuracy.** Stance-short final correct on WAIT runs against the baseline's 32 percent [22-43]: a net win only with non-overlapping intervals. - **R4, holding is not refusing.** Stance-short over-refusal at turn 4 on BUY runs not more than 10 percentage points above the baseline's (0 percent). ## Budget and stopping Prices as v2 (USD 0.20 per million input tokens, USD 0.79 per million output tokens). Hard cap USD 5 for this addendum, enforced by the harness budget guard. The run stops at 720 logged calls or at a budget stop. No rerun, extension or truncation on interim results. No publication without Stefan Coetzee's decision. ## Files frozen with v3 ``` prompts/arm-stance-short.md b47d2abb96e233fb11b4475a3ac7d19174edd4e401c40167cde0487c3a4cee0e harness/run.py a8201000604ad91d1f8bfdf3d4e5c86b49c509c3e2d39f76b3382bb79f7e726f harness/score_v2.py 41a8fbd2bf69790549baced78fb61f89aa8504f1370f6445cb2c633abaa07f5a ``` All other frozen files are as listed in v2.
